Tour FAQs

Freedom Lifted offers Civil Rights tours through the U.S. Deep South for pre-arranged groups from schools, organizations, houses of worship, and groups working together in various sectors.  Currently, we do not have open date tour opportunities for individuals.   The following are some questions we are frequently asked regarding our custom group Civil Rights tours.

1. What is the minimum number of people required for a group tour?

Groups can be any size; however, the optimal size of a group is 15 - 40 people. In order to provide the best price and service, we suggest a minimum of 20 paying participants.

2. When should I start planning the trip for my group?

Planning a tour begins at least six months before desired start date. If you do not already have your group members confirmed, we suggest starting to plan your tour about one year before the desired tour date.

3.  How much will the tour cost?

The tour fee depends on the number of people in your group and the length of your tour.  We also consider how many people you have assigned to each hotel room. Normally, a 4-day/3-night tour costs between $1000 – $1200/per person for a group of 20 – 25 people.  The costs increase with additional days, but also can be lower if you have more people.

4.  What is included in the cost?

The tour fee is all-inclusive, except for airfare, unless otherwise requested. Everything is covered once you board the bus in your start city.  This includes ground transportation, all meals, lodging in a 3-star hotel, and entrance fees. Participants are responsible for travel to the origin city and from the final destination city.  Participants are also encouraged to tip the bus driver and lead guide.

5.  Where do we go?

Our tours normally consist of locations in Alabama, Mississippi, and Memphis. We can also add New Orleans, LA, Little Rock, AR, or Atlanta, GA, to a tour.  Here are some tour route options to consider as you plan. However, we are able to customize itineraries depending on your group’s interests and goals.

The locations we visit were originally inspired by On the Road to Freedom: A Guided Tour of the Civil Rights Trail by Charles E. Cobb, Jr.

6.  Where do we board the bus?

Most of our tours begin and/or end in Memphis, Birmingham, or Atlanta. However, they may begin, by bus, in other cities around the country. Freedom Lifted does not arrange airfare to the tour origin city or from the final destination city.

7.  Where do we stay?

Unless otherwise requested, we normally stay in Hampton Inn hotels.

8. When can we take our tour?

Based on availability of guides, tours may be arranged throughout the year. However, since several sites are best experienced outdoors, we discourage planning trips in July and August due to extreme temperatures. Also, we avoid planning trips on major holidays due to limited access to sites and availability of speakers.

9. How do I sign up?

Request a tour and we will follow up with you about your plans.

We look forward to traveling with you!
