A History of Policing - An Online Class for Youth

UPDATE: THIS CLASS HAS REACHED THE MAXIMUM NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS AND IS NOW FULL. You may register here for the waiting list.

In partnership with the Chicago Freedom School and Assata’s Daughters, Freedom Lifted is hosting a free 4-part online course for young people ages 12 - 18 on the history of policing and what a world could look like without it. This course is designed to offer young people the opportunity to learn the historical context behind current calls to #DefundPolice.

The course will feature guest speakers, related readings, and breakout session discussions based on age.

The classes will take place on Thursdays, June 18 - July 9, starting at 10 am PT, 11 am MT, 12 pm CT, 1 pm ET. They will last for 1.5 hours with an additional .5 hours at the end for participants who identify as Black, Indigenous, or People of Color (BIPOC). We will cover the following topics:

June 18: The Origins of Policing in the U.S. - Speaker: William C. Anderson

June 25: Policing Social Movements - Speaker: Mia Henry

July 2: Policing Across Borders - Speaker: William C. Anderson

July 9: A World Without Policing - Speaker: Benji Hart

It is recommended, but not required, to attend all four parts.

This class is designed as a space for young people, specifically middle and high school aged youth. PLEASE DO NOT REGISTER IF YOU ARE OVER 18.

A password-protected private class site with log in instructions will be sent to registrants via email 2 - 3 days before each class. You will need to register by Tuesday, June 16, in order to get the readings and the link for the first class.

Registration will remain open until we reach 500 as this is the limit for our call and the most we can manage while still able to curate the breakout rooms according to age. We will record the presentation portion of the classes, but will not release this publicly until we review it and are assured it does not compromise the privacy of any participants.

There is no cost for youth to take this class. However, if you or your family would like to donate, we encourage you to support our partners, the Chicago Freedom School and Assata’s Daughters.

This class is full. You may register here for the waiting list.
